CONTEXT & PRESENTATION:For the first time in 100 years, this year's Olympic Games are being held in Paris, the hometown of Pierre de Coubertin (1863 - 1937), founder of modern Olympism. An opportunity to recall the modernity of his philosophy, and the strength of his legacy.
Committed throughout his life to the Olympic ideal, Pierre de Coubertin created a philosophy (the Olympic Charter), a world organization (the IOC), and a platform for international encounters, which today remains the only one to unite so many nations around sport. The Association Familiale Pierre de Coubertin (AFPC), which brings together some of his descendants, is organizing, with the support of the International Olympic Museum in Lausanne, a unique exhibition on Olympism and the personal life of Pierre de Coubertin. Labelled a "Cultural Olympiad", the exhibition focuses on Coubertin's revolutionary ideas, and their universal and timeless character. It also shows the positive impact of the Olympic movement on developing countries.
The exhibition is on display at the Town Hall in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. This is the district where Pierre de Coubertin spent his youth, but it is also in the immediate vicinity of two major competition venues: the Invalides and the Champ de Mars. Alongside books and historical documents, the event will feature documentary videos, photos, paintings and drawings.
